New Muslims · The First Days
You said the shahada. Now what?
The first week, in order. One thing to lock in each day. Do them in sequence and by next week the prayer is yours.
You say the shahada, the testimony of faith, and you mean it, and you are a Muslim. You do not need an imam, a ceremony, or a certificate. Saying it in front of witnesses at a mosque is recommended, because it connects you to the community, but it is not a condition.
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ
Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illallaah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasoolullaah.
"I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah."
The short version
- Everything before this moment is forgiven. Completely. You begin clean.
- Your Islam counts from today. The rest - diet, clothes, speech, old habits - you put right as you go; none of it has to be sorted before you start.
- Prayer is the backbone. Learn the wash, then the movements, then the words - in that order.
- Find one mosque and one knowledgeable person you can ask. Do not learn your religion from strangers on the internet alone.
Your first seven days
Take the full shower, and breathe
Do a ghusl - a full-body wash with the intention of purifying yourself as a new Muslim. Thank Allah. Know that everything before this moment is wiped clean. You are starting from zero, with the slate blank.
Learn wudu
Learn the wash before prayer. Do it before every prayer time even if you cannot pray the full prayer yet - it builds the rhythm. The wudu guide →
Learn the five names and times
Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha. Install one prayer-time app and one that shows the qiblah direction. Prayer times →
Learn the movements only
Stand, bow, stand, prostrate, sit, prostrate. Practise the shape of one unit with no words, until it is smooth. The shape of the prayer →
Add Al-Fatihah
Start memorising the opening chapter, one verse at a time, from a reliable reciter. Read it from a card in the prayer until it is yours.
Add the sitting at the end
Learn the tashahhud - the testimony you say sitting at the end of the prayer. Learn it in short phrases.
Pray one full prayer, start to finish
Put it together and pray one complete prayer. It will not be perfect. Pray it anyway. Then pray the next one.
Then keep going
Pray those five, in their times, for the rest of your life. Add a little each week - another surah, the words after the prayer, the sunnah units. Start reading a readable translation of the Qur’an. Keep good company.
Five is the standard from day one, not a target you work up to. If a prayer is hard to place, look at your real day - Fajr, Maghrib and Isha fall outside work hours, and Dhuhr and Asr have wide windows. Make up on the spot any you genuinely cannot pray on time, and keep tightening until all five land in their windows.
